About the Texas Old Route 66 Association

We are a 501-c, tax exempt, non-profit organization chartered in the State of Texas since 1991. Our offices are located at 100 Kingsley Street in the museum complex in McLean, TX.

We publish the Texas Route 66 Newsletter quarterly, supply brochures and information on request, and maintain the Texas Route 66 Exhibit, the first Route 66 museum on the route.

The Texas Old Route 66 Association is also involved with preservation projects on Route 66. The McLean Phillips 66 Station, the first in Texas, was saved and restored by the association so future travelers on Texas Route 66 could enjoy this bit of nostalgia and get a glimpse of what life was like in the "good ole days" along the Mother Road.

As you cross the 178 miles of the old road across the Panhandle, remember those who have gone before you, many times in broken-down cars and trucks, always hoping for an easier life somewhere down the road. Feel the hot Texas winds ... observe the wide open spaces of an area that to some was "as vast as the ocean." Stop in at the small town coffee shops to relive some of the old stories of the road with the locals and enjoy the small town friendliness that only the Lone Star state of Texas can offer!

Travelers on old Route 66 in the early '30s probably averaged 60 miles per day ... if they didn't break down or get stuck in the thick Panhandle mud. Many locals made extra spending money by assisting travelers out of muddy roads with teams of horses.

Everyone carried the proverbial water can. If the kids didn't need it, the car would. Gas stations were primitive by today's standards and always seemed to be at the wrong place. The motel or tourist court still hadn't been invented and hotels were an expense most travelers couldn't afford. Many people just camped where night caught them ... which only added to the lore of the old road.
